The cemetery index was initiated in 1993 with the goal of constructing a master database with a record for every burial in Metro Detroit’s Jewish cemeteries, from the earliest recorded information to the present.
The bulk of the records are for individuals who died between the mid-1800s to 1999. We are currently working to update the records and are continuously adding to the database.
The Irwin I. Cohn Michigan Jewish Cemetery Index is a free online resource supported by the Leonard N. Simons Jewish Community Archives and the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.
Please see our list of cemeteries for their location.
While many cemeteries were very helpful in allowing access to their records, old, damaged, incomplete, or missing records made the task of compiling a complete index impossible. As a result, our database does not contain every name. If you do not locate the name of a specific individual, please be advised that that person may well be buried in a Jewish cemetery in Michigan; this index is intended as a “first stop” for researchers.
